Choosing a finish · 2 MIN READ

Epoxy or polished concrete for your garage?

A garage may be a parking space, workshop, storage room or part of the home you use every day. Choosing its floor starts with those demands, then the appearance you want.

Two different ways to finish concrete

Mechanically polished concrete reveals and refines the slab itself. Epoxy is a coating system installed over a prepared substrate. The first keeps the concrete and its aggregate central to the appearance; the second can offer a different visual treatment depending on the selected product. Ask to see examples of the actual system being proposed.

Describe daily use honestly

Tell the installer about vehicles, workshop activity, stored equipment and any regular wet use. Mention sunlight at the door and any history of dampness or peeling coatings. These details help determine what needs assessment. Avoid assuming that a generic “garage coating” is suitable for every combination of exposure, traffic and maintenance.

Preparation is part of the floor

An attractive coating starts with a suitable substrate. Existing residues and coatings must be considered, and moisture conditions can affect system selection. Sika’s application guidance, for example, calls for substrate and environmental checks before application. The right requirements depend on the specified product; copying a generic preparation recipe is not a substitute for that assessment.

Ask about practical handover details

Discuss the finished texture, cleaning routine and when people, vehicles or equipment can return. These are separate questions: being ready for light foot traffic does not automatically mean a floor is ready for a parked car. Ask for instructions for the chosen system and plan where vehicles and stored items will go during the work.

Compare the look and the scope together

Send photos of the garage, approximate dimensions and your preferred appearance. Flag cracks, old paint and damp-looking areas. Compare quotations that include preparation and any repairs, rather than only the final treatment. Peninsula can help you consider the slab, the use of the garage and the visual result as one decision.
